BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Chinese national faces formal charges following accusations of attempting to entice a minor.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Shengjie Cheng, 32, was indicted by a grand jury and faces charges of attempted enticement of a minor. The DOJ said Cheng resides in Baton Rouge on a student visa. During his arraignment, Cheng pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The DOJ said that around March 31, 2025, Cheng used a fake name on social media and tried to persuade someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl to have an illegal sexual relationship.

In May 2025, Cheng was arrested in Livingston Parish on charges of indecent behavior with a juvenile and computer-aided solicitation of a minor.

If Cheng is convicted, he will face a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison. He also faces a $250,000 fine, lifetime supervised release, and must register as a sex offender. He could also face deportation from the United States after finishing the sentence.
