JACKSON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Friday is expected to be a difficult day for the Breathitt County community.

Two weeks ago, neighbors came together to search for 10-year-old Jayden Spicer. Thursday, they will come together again, heartbroken, saying their final goodbyes, all honoring a life gone far too soon.

Visitation for Jayden started at 10 a.m. Thursday morning at the Breathitt Funeral Home, followed by his funeral service at 2 p.m.

Law enforcement, local fire departments, and other first responders will escort Jayden’s body to the Molands Cemetery afterwards with as many blue and red flashing lights as possible.

Jayden was first reported missing on Aug. 6 from his home on Pan Bowl Branch Road. After nearly a week of searching, police were led to Canoe Road, 19 miles away from his home. That’s where police said Jayden’s body was found, buried in a tote inside a shallow grave.

Jackson police interviewed his mother, Felicia Gross, who told officers she believed her son had passed away after having a medical emergency from the sleeping medication she had given him.

Gross is charged with his murder. Jackson Police Chief Brian Haddix said he appreciates everyone and the countless hours of volunteers who came out to search for Jayden.

“I’ve been in law enforcement 26 years. I’ve seen child deaths over the years; nothing hits home like this one. It’s taking an emotional toll on all officers, troopers, fire departments, and rescue squads involved,” said Haddix.

Officials anticipate 70 to 80 vehicles will participate. Breathitt County officials have declared Aug. 21 as “Jayden Spicer Day” as the community prepares to honor his life.

Haddix said the search ended up in a way they didn’t want, but hopes that this procession is bigger than he could imagine and hopes it honors a life gone far too soon.

“This has since grown into a larger scale. You know, there’s agencies coming from all over the state now to show their support to local and county agencies. Fire departments from across the state have reached out and requested to be involved in this procession,” Haddix said.

Jayden’s favorite colors were blue and red, which is a fitting tribute to honor his life as law enforcement escorts his body.
