Woman accused of making bomb, planning to escape jail

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman who allegedly made a home explosion device and a man were accused of plotting the woman’s escape from the Lafayette County Detention Center in Mississippi last Thursday.

On Aug. 14, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office received information from the detention center about a plan for an escape attempt.

After speaking to witnesses and gathering information in the investigation, they said Mark Montgomery, 48, from Greenville, Miss., was arrested and charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.

Christina Willis, 27, of Batesville, was arrested earlier this month after allegedly making a homemade explosive device.

Willis was charged with attempted murder and with planting or placing a bomb or explosive, or a weapon of mass destruction.

She is now being charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.

On June 20, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious package on a victim’s car. The victim removed the package and gave it over to deputies once they arrived.

June 23, the LCSO with the assistance of the Tupelo Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reported that the package contained a homemade explosive device.

On Aug. 4, a federal search warrant was conducted by ATF, Panola County Sheriff’s Office, Tupelo Bomb Squad, and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics at a residence on Highway 35 South in Panola County.

During their search, they said they discovered bomb-making materials, homemade high explosive substances, firearms, narcotics, and an explosive device found inside the home.

The ATF will be presenting her case to a federal grand jury, and she is expected to face multiple federal charges as well.

According to LCSD, Montgomery was issued a $50,000 bond on Saturday and is being held at the detention center awaiting additional federal charges.

They said Willis’ charges will be added to her original bond, and she is still being held for a bond hearing on her original charges.
