Caissie, a right-handed throwing, left-handed hitting 23-year-old outfielder, is the No. 1-ranked prospect in the Cubs’ system, according to MLB.com. In 92 games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs this season, he is hitting .292/.393/.573 with 22 home runs, 26 doubles and 52 RBI.
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers was first to report the news.
A human interest nugget about Caissie, he was born and raised in Burlington, Ontario, which is about 37 miles south of Toronto. He will have the opportunity to make his Major League Baseball debut in Toronto against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Caissie came to the North Side in a trade with the San Diego Padres on Dec. 29, 2020. The Cubs sent starting pitcher Yu Darvish and catcher Victor Caratini to the Padres in exchange for Caissie, starting pitcher Zach Davies and three other prospects.
Caissie takes the place of catcher Miguel Amaya, who suffered a freak ankle injury in his return Wednesday night, on the roster.
The Cubs take on the Blue Jays Thursday at the Rogers Centre, with first pitch set to take place at 2:07 p.m. CT. Matthew Boyd (11-5, 2.45 ERA) is expected to start for Chicago, while Max Scherzer (2-2, 4.21 ERA) gets the start for Toronto.
