CHICAGO, Ill. – Today, Indiana House Democrats and the Texas House Democrats met together in Chicago in a show of solidarity against plans to conduct an unprecedented mid-decade redistricting in both their states.

“The position we face today should trouble every American who believes in the promise of this country, who believes the Constitution matters, and who understands that efforts to redistrict in the middle of a decade are not only unprecedented, they are morally corrupt,” said State Rep. Cherrish Pryor, House District 94, in Indianapolis. “I proudly stand with my Texas colleagues to protect our democracy, to resist this power grab, and to stand firmly on the right side of history.”

Rep. Pryor is the Floor Leader for the Indiana House Democrats. She is also a resident of Marion County and Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, currently represented in Congress by Democrat André Carson. Rep. Pryor is a member of the Elections and Apportionment Committee, which would traditionally be the first to act on any redistricting legislation.

“I am represented by one of only two Democrats in Indiana’s U.S. House delegation. Any attempt to eliminate that district will divide the minority community and deny us the ability to elect someone who truly reflects our values and advocates for our best interests,” said Rep. Pryor.

“Not a single Hoosier Republican called for this special session on redistricting until Vice President JD Vance barged in,” said State Rep. Ed DeLaney, House District 86 in Indianapolis. “No Hoosier voters are asking for this. This is D.C. politics invading our state.”

An experienced elections lawyer, Rep. DeLaney currently serves as the Indiana House Democrats’ Assistant Democratic Caucus Chair. Rep. DeLaney has served in the Indiana legislature since 2008.

“This starts an endless game of tit for tat redistricting that will irrevocably harm American voters. If this D.C. government would focus on solving our problems, like the unmet needs for preschool, Medicaid, or education, we’d all be better off,” said Rep. DeLaney.

Indiana’s 1st Congressional District, located in Northwest Indiana and also known as “the Region” is also represented by a Democrat, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan. Congressman Mrvan has represented the 1st since 2020.

“I have known Congressman Frank Mrvan since we were teenagers; he is a good man who works hard for the citizens of Congressional District 1 in Northwest Indiana and that is why we chose him to represent us in Washington, D.C.,” said State Representative Earl Harris, House District 2 in East Chicago. “In Indiana, state legislature members are elected by the people in the communities where we live. Calling us back for a special session not aimed at helping our constituents, but to benefit someone in Washington, D.C., is a disservice to the voters.”

Rep. Harris is the Assistant Democratic Floor Leader for the Indiana House Democrats and also the Chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus.

“Mid-decade redistricting would disenfranchise voters in Black and Brown communities and will take away the voices of many,” added Rep. Harris.

“Republicans have made clear they will stop at nothing to steal the midterm election,” said Texas House Democratic Caucus Chairman State Representative Gene Wu, House District 137 in Houston. “In denying Republicans quorum, Texas Democrats have ignited a movement across the country to fight the Trump takeover. I am proud to stand with and support Indiana Democrats as they take their own stand to protect the voice of their constituents.”

Additional Indiana House Caucus members were in attendance to offer support today to the Texas House Caucus members and to raise awareness on the threat of mid-decade redistricting.
