Market of Choice will not purchase the Food Front Co-Op in Northwest Portland after all, according to a press release issued by the company Aug. 13.
The decision comes after more than 90% of voting members of the co-op approved its sale to Oregon-based Market of Choice for $1.5 million.
“We appreciate the recent vote of confidence from the Food Front Cooperative,” said Market of Choice President Zach Wright.
“Our interest in the property stemmed from a concept my father, Rick, wanted to explore,” he said. “However, his vision was still evolving and had not yet been formalized. Without his guidance, the path forward is less clear. After thoughtful review, we have decided not to move forward with the purchase.
Market of Choice is Oregon’s largest family-owned, independent grocer. They operate 12 stores throughout the state.
“We appreciate the opportunity and community’s support, but we do not believe we can deliver the Market of Choice experience in this location in a way that aligns with our brand promise and business strategy today,” Wright said.
The announcement ends a nearly two-year effort to acquire the property.
Food Front Co-Op closed its doors due to financial issues in April 2023 after 50 years of serving Northwest Portland.
