FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is offering auction bidders the opportunity to own a historic lighthouse in Connecticut.

This online auction, hosted by the GSA, allows Americans to preserve and maintain a piece of history. The Penfield Reef Lighthouse, located in Fairfield, Conn., was built in 1874 and stands at 51 feet tall beside a two-story keeper’s dwelling.

The lighthouse marks a submerged reef extending southeast from Fairfield Beach, approximately one mile from the Black Rock Harbor entrance in Bridgeport. The location is only accessible by boat and will continue to serve as a navigation aid for the region.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for historic preservation,” said Public Buildings Service Regional Commissioner Glenn C. Rotondo. “This auction not only supports GSA’s mission of responsible asset management but also provides a rare chance for someone to own an iconic piece of American maritime heritage located in scenic Long Island Sound.”

Bidders are required to register for the auction with a deposit of $10,000. Registered bidders will be allowed to inspect the lighthouse property, with the last opportunity to do so on Tuesday, August 19.

The auction is expected to end on August 20, but will be extended if a new bid is submitted within 24 hours of the scheduled closing time. Participants must place bids in increments of $10,000. For more information or to participate in the auction, visit realestatesales.gov.
