Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office secures $15 million for jail repairs, upgrades

According to the OPSO, the bonds were approved by the Louisiana State Bond Commission. Officials with the sheriff’s office said the financial support will help cover expenses for the upkeep of the jail and related facilities, including security repairs and replacements.

“This approval allows us to move forward with critical safety and security improvements that have been delayed for far too long — from upgrading our locking systems and installing additional razor wire, to modernizing our surveillance technology and fortifying our perimeter,” said Sheriff Susan Hutson.

In an effort to combat ongoing issues with lock tampering and damage caused by prisoners, the OPSO has reportedly renovated two pods and outfitted the doors with 60 upgraded surface mounted locks and continuous hinges.

OPSO officials said an additional 360 locks will need to be installed at a cost of around $3.6 million.
