“I just heard heard a lot of gunshots and about twenty minutes after I came outside, and the police was here,” said Kirby Cornelious, a neighbor who lives near where the shooting took place.
Cornelious said more than two dozen rounds were fired.
“It was twenty seven rounds; twenty seven bullets they picked up off the ground. So that’s a lot. It was some kind of semi automatic,” he said.
The three victims struck by gunfire, a three-year-old male, his 21-year-old mother and her 21-year-old second cousin, made it to the local ER in a bullet riddled vehicle.
“By the time I got there it was hectic. A lot of family members, a lot of my officers trying to keep the peace and let the nurses and doctors do their thing.” said Chief of Helena-West Helena Police Department, Quanderius Sanders.
Investigators are looking for a motive and whatever they can learn from the wounded, but will wait as they recover.
And law enforcement, Arkansas State Police and the city government are working to find who’s responsible.
“Certainly our thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals who were injured in this matter…particularly there was a young child who was injured severely,” said Helena-West Helena Mayor Pro Tempore, Don Etherly.
The three-year-old is in LeBonheur and the adults are recovering at Regional One and at this time, their conditions are unknown.
