ACADIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — A special mass was held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church to honor Charlene Richard, known as the “Little Cajun Saint, on the 66th anniversary of her death.

Charlene Richard died from acute lymphatic leukemia at the age of 12, and her life and legacy continue to inspire many. The Vatican has accepted an investigation into her life, which could lead to her canonization as a saint.

“Everybody here is praying that one day soon she’ll be named Saint,” said Nanette Reiners, president of the Charlene Richard Foundation.

Charlene Richard is remembered for her faith and the way she offered her suffering for others, which has led to numerous testimonies of miracles attributed to her intercession. Reiners explained the canonization process.

“The next step is venerable,” said Reiners. “And then after that, it would be blessed. And then sainthood.”

Reiners also shared about a relic of Charlene Richard.

“This is what is a first class relic,” said Reiners. “At the bottom here is a piece of Charlene’s finger bone. I’ve used it preying on sick kids before and adults. It’s just, you know, a piece of her.”

12-year-old Samuel Lemaire attended the mass and expressed his admiration for Charlene Richard.

“I’m so glad we get to celebrate, Charlene,” said Lemaire. “And on this special day.”

Reiners emphasized the impact Charlene Richard has on people.

“There’s just some kind of peace they feel when they leave here because they help celebrate a part of Charlie,” said Lemaire

As the investigation into Charlene Richard’s life progresses, her story continues to inspire those who visit her grave and participate in events honoring her legacy. Her potential canonization could further solidify her impact as the “Little Cajun Saint”.
