A caller, police said Monday, advised police that his brother, Angel Montano was acting aggressively and armed with a knife. The caller told police that Montano was threatening to kill him and his mother.
Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and remained outside, awaiting the arrival of less-than-lethal weapons and resources. Dispatchers remained on the phone with the caller, updating the officers outside.
The caller told dispatchers that Montano still wanted to kill him. Police said the situation escalated when Montano armed himself with a second knife.
Outside the residence, officers heard a “loud altercation” inside, police said. Fearing that someone inside was being harmed, they advanced and found the door partially open.
The officers announced their presence and pushed the door open. Within seconds, police said Montano appeared with two knives and came at the officers. Despite orders to stop, he exited the residence and continued to advance toward the officers.
It was then, police said, that officers Stocking and Remick fired at the suspect. They attempted to provide medical aid, but Montano succumbed to his injuries.
A fundraiser organized by his family days after the shooting identified Montano, 27, as a former Marine reservist officer.
Stocking and Remick have since been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Richmond PD Investigations Bureau is investigating the incident along with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
