Man killed by Richmond police ID’d as U.S. Marine

RICHMOND, Calif. (KRON) — Two Richmond Police Department officers shot a man to death after he allegedly threatened people inside a home Monday, police said.

Days after the deadly police shooting, the man was identified as 27-year-old Angel Montano, who served in the U.S. Marines as a reserve officer, his family wrote on a verified GoFundMe page.

“Angel was a proud U.S. Marine,” family members wrote.

Richmond Police Department officers went to a house on First Street, near Barrett Avenue, at 5 p.m. Monday in response to a 911 call. The 911 caller reported that an armed man was inside and threatening to kill people, according to RPD.

A lieutenant said officers could hear a “commotion” inside the house.

As officers approached the front door, they were immediately “confronted by a subject who was armed with at least one knife, directly outside the residence. At that time, two officers discharged their firearms,” RPD said.

The lieutenant said the confrontation unfolded “very rapidly.” Montano never made it to a hospital, and he died at the scene.

After officers blocked off the shooting scene with yellow crime tape, people who knew Montano were very emotional. One man shouted at police, “Look it up! Angel Montano, Marine veteran.” Another man yelled at officers, “You killed one of your own.”

One neighbor who heard gunshots ring out told KRON4 that police handled the incident badly. “Very sad. These are the people we trusted to save our lives? No way,” the neighbor said.

Montano reportedly struggled with his mental health leading up to his clash with law enforcement. Two officers who shot the Marine were placed on administrative leave.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the officers’ use of lethal force and circumstances around the police shooting.
