Just after 8 p.m., officers attempted to stop a BMW SUV connected to an active investigation near Hermosa Street and Westwood Avenue, but the driver refused to stop.
Police reported they were headed eastbound on Avenue 216 with lights and sirens, as the pursuit left city limits, while a 61-year-old Strathmore man was reaching the intersection at Road 232 in a Toyota Tundra.
Officials reported the 61-year-old ran the stop sign at the intersection, directly in front of the oncoming police vehicle. The crash caused both vehicles to roll over before coming to a rest on their sides.
Investigators say one officer was able to self-extricate, but another needed help from other officers and bystanders. Both officers were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
Officials report the driver of the Toyota was mechanically extricated by the Tulare County Fire Department and transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Further investigation led CHP to conduct a felony DUI investigation into the driver of the Toyota.
CHP is actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
