Baton Rouge Police sergeant dies after targeted attack
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A decorated Baton Rouge Police sergeant has died after what authorities call a “deliberate and cowardly” attack. Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a 23-year veteran, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, at a Baton Rouge hospital.

Eisworth was critically injured on June 16, 2025, when investigators say Gad Black, 41, intentionally rammed his pickup truck into Eisworth’s police motorcycle as the officer traveled along Joor Road. Deputies said Black admitted to following Eisworth and expressed a deep hatred for law enforcement.

Black was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, hate crimes, and resisting an officer. His alleged family member, Asia Raby, 40, was charged with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.

“It is with profound sadness that I must share that our beloved Motors Officer, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, died moments ago surrounded by loved ones. Caleb was an amazing officer and a good man. He spent seven weeks fighting hard to overcome his injuries, but ultimately lost his battle today,” Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas “TJ” Morse said. “I ask that our community continue to lift the Eisworth family and the men and women of our Baton Rouge Police Department up in prayer.”

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed to Louisiana First News that he will seek the death penalty.

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards asks that all flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Eisworth. Flags will remain at half-staff until his funeral to honor his dedication, bravery, and service to Baton Rouge.

Local officials react

Please join me in praying for BRPD Sergeant Caleb Eisworth’s family, friends, fellow officers, and the entire Baton Rouge Police Department. As a 23-year veteran with the department, Sgt. Eisworth received the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest honor, and multiple awards for heroism. His memory and impact on the Baton Rouge community will live on forever. I support District Attorney Hillar Moore’s decision to seek the death penalty in this case, and I will offer any support he needs from my office.

Livingston Police Department Chief Randy Dufrene

It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of one of our finest, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth. He was a warrior — humble, tough, gritty, and deeply compassionate. My prayers are with his beautiful family during this heartbreaking time.

Baton Rouge, we must pause and reflect. When will this violence end? Too many lives are being taken on our streets — a pregnant woman shot to death, young children killed, innocent citizens struck by gunfire while simply sitting on their porches. Sgt. Eisworth was murdered because of the uniform he wore to work in service to our city.

You elected me to help fix this. By the grace of God, I pledge to take every measure to keep our community safe. Sgt. Eisworth gave his life for that same mission. His passing comes on the 20-year anniversary of the murder of Officer Terry Melancon — a sobering reminder of the dangers our officers face each day.

It is my plea and my prayer that our parish unites as one. Let us love each other, help one another, and seek understanding so that we can heal.

God bless, and rest in peace, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth. To his family: we stand with you, and we will carry you through this
