NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As we near the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, non-profit organization Rebuilding Together New Orleans is partnering with the Louisiana Department of Insurance to install fortified roofing systems in the Greater New Orleans area.

‘Undermines public trust,’ Gov. Landry orders LSP investigation into dumped court records

“It’s high wind, high rain resistant and it’s exactly what homeowners need in New Orleans and in Louisiana,” said Olivia Park, Rebuilding Together New Orleans program director.

State Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple toured homes that received free, fortified roofs. Temple explains how this science-backed roofing system is designed to handle heavier rains and stronger winds. He says Fortified’s roofing technology is helping New Orleans residents to stay prepared for this hurricane season and beyond.

“There’s a waterproof barrier between the roof and the decking, and there’s some additional flashing to prevent shingles from flying off your home and your contents getting wet.”

Along the tour, Temple caught up with one of four homeowners who benefited from Friday’s installations. Barry says service-based programs like Rebuilding Together push the community forward and give him the confidence to feel safe this hurricane season.

“I feel great about it now. Everything that I’ve done to the home, the roof is just the icing on the cake.”
