Wednesday: Temperatures return to above normal status for the first time in 8 days

Wednesday saw a noticeable increase in temperatures areawide as even lakeshore communities topped out in the lower 80s while the official airports logged highs in the upper 80s. A few inland locations even reached the lower 90s.

The warmth ended a string of seven consecutive days with below normal temperatures and marked the first time recording a daily temperature surplus in 8 days, since July 29^th. 

Despite a few puffy cumulus clouds, nearly 80% of the day’s possible sunshine was observed according to weather historian, Frank Wachowski, who keeps track of sunshine at his south side residence.  

Despite warmer temperatures, it was the continued poor air quality that made headlines again. Much of the day was spent in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. 

The following recommendations were made by the Illinois EPA

• Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard
• Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
• Be active outdoors when air quality is better.

Late afternoon temperature change map indicated how readings were modestly warmer than the same time on Tuesday afternoon. 

24-hour Dew point change

Nearly all of the Midwest and Great Lakes have seen an increase in moisture levels over the past 24 hours, resulting in higher dew points which you noticed if you spent any time outdoors.
