OPD reports sharp drop in violent crime for first half of 2025

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — The Oakland Police Department said the first half of 2025 has seen a sharp decrease in violent crime as the department deals with a staffing shortage.

According to a report from the Major Cities’ Chiefs Association, for the first six months of 2025 — compared to 2024 — Oakland has seen a decrease in most violent crimes. This includes homicides down 21%, assaults down 18%, robbery down 41%, and rape down 24%. However, arson is up 9%.

“We strongly urge all residents and business to report crimes regardless of the severity so we can better identify crime patterns and deploy the necessary resources,” said Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell.

Chief Mitchell highlights a positive upward trend, pointing to 6 new 911 dispatchers and an increased call answering time that hits an average of a 73% within 15 seconds. He acknowledges the statistics and people’s perception of safety don’t line up.

“We are on the right path, although there is still work to be done to reach the 90% standard for the state for calls answering within 15 seconds. It’s exciting to see our significant and steady improvements compared to this time last year,” said Chief Mitchell.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee praises cooperation with law enforcement for progress.

“Ceasefire is focused on deterrent strategies that directly targets gun violence at its source by intervening with high-risk individuals before shootings happen,” said Mayor Lee. “This is a critical part of our comprehensive public safety strategy.”

One of the biggest issues OPD faces is a continuing staff shortage. Mitchell reassures residents that filling that gap is slowly improving with the first police academy class in over a year.

However, the Oakland Police Officers Association says it’s not enough.

A spokesperson for the union said in a statement to KRON4 that “Crime remains a significant issue in Oakland. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated and tireless Oakland police officers, we are making some progress.”
