Mike Doyle, who passed away at the age of 76, left a lasting legacy through his work as a journalist and educator.
He spent 25 years at the Rockford Register Star, where he covered the Chicago Bears, before transitioning to teaching journalism at Rock Valley College and Belvidere High Schools.
“Mike was really good about not only teaching his students, but encouraging them. Influencing them. Showing them the big picture and just being our greatest cheerleader,” said Paul Arco, a long-time friend and former student of Doyle.
Doyle’s influence extended beyond his journalism career, as he inspired many students to pursue their passions. Arco, who took Doyle’s introductory journalism class as a freshman 40 years ago, credits Doyle with helping him realize he could make a career out of writing.
Andie Behling, now editor in chief of Madison Magazine, reflected on Doyle’s impact, saying, “I’m looking at my Facebook feed now and seeing all these posts from students that said ‘He had such a profound impact on a very important part of my life and it, you know, changed things.'”
Behling developed her passion for journalism after taking Doyle’s class at Belvidere North. She believes Doyle inspired a generation of great communicators.
“Mr. Doyle’s impact on me really changed the course of my career. He set me up for a beautiful career that’s lasted over ten years now professionally. So I’m just really thankful,” she said.
Doyle authored six local history books, including one on the 1967 Belvidere tornado, and was a big part of the Boone County Historical Society, serving as a board member for the Boone County Museum.
“He was passionate about his family that he adored. Passionate about his work. Passionate about the community. Passionate about his Italian culture. I mean, everything Mike did he did it 110%. He loved life and it just showed in everything that he did,” Arco said.
Arco worked with Doyle on the Greater Rockford Italian American Association’s magazine Papagallo. Doyle’s family says he loved writing other people’s stories and always encouraged his students to do the same.
“It’s cliché, but you hear people say ‘I never heard anybody say a bad word about him’. And I didn’t. I never heard anybody say a bad word about Mike Doyle. I think everybody loved him,” Arco said.
