The planned extension will bring light rail service from Minneapolis to Brooklyn Park, but the project has sparked controversy due to concerns over the potential displacement of underserved residents and businesses during the extensive construction, which may last for years.
On Thursday, residents gathered to urge local officials to secure state funding aimed at preventing displacement and ensuring that community interests are prioritized.
The Met Council, tasked with advancing the project, claims that anti-displacement measures are a priority.
However, residents expressed skepticism, pointing out that promises made have not been fulfilled, stating, ‘How can we continue to trust our governmental partners when they make it harder for us to take care of our communities?’
They highlighted that over the past decade, the Met Council has allocated $221 million towards planning the Blue Line extension, with some state lawmakers now suggesting a reconsideration of a bus rapid transit route instead.
Hennepin County says it’s committed to supporting community leaders while still safeguarding public funds.
