A man who was attacked with a tire iron last month has died from his injuries, and his attacker is facing murder charges.

Daniel Moua, 20, of St. Paul, is charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree murder, according to a criminal complaint.

St. Paul police were called to the 600 block of Hyacinth Avenue just before noon on July 13, the complaint states. At the scene, officers found a man on the ground bleeding “profusely” from the head.

The complaint adds that the victim was unconscious and his skull was exposed.

Officers reported that Moua was standing over the victim while another man tried to help him. Court records say the man helping the victim told law enforcement that he didn’t witness what happened, but knew Moua and the victim used to do “scrapping” together and that they had a falling out.

Moua told officers that he was sitting in a car on Hyacinth Avenue when he saw the victim walking down the sidewalk, adding that he then got out to put his dog away, and when he returned, the victim was on down on the ground, according to the complaint.

The person who called 911 told dispatch that a man had run up to the victim with what looked like a cane and hit him on the head, knocking him to the ground, court records state. The attacker then ran into a garage before running back out and standing by the victim.

A search of the garage that the attacker ran into recovered a tire iron with dried blood on it in a plastic bag, the complaint said. Moua’s family members told law enforcement that the tire iron is his and that he usually keeps it in the van.
