On August 1st, 2025, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) released a warning advisory after sampling identified the presence of E. Coli bacteria in Salem Pond. A warning advisory indicates that the presence of waterborne pathogens or harmful algal blooms exceeds a safe threshold as established by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.
According to DEQ, “waterborne pathogens can cause diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, fever, and rashes”. Additionally, high levels of Escherichia coli, or E. coli, indicate high amounts of fecal contamination in a water body.
DEQ Officials say individuals should be aware of and adhere to the following rules:
Additionally, individuals should avoid recreating in bodies of water when they have had diarrhea within the last two weeks. They should also shower prior to getting into the water and ensure diapers and pet waste are disposed of properly.
