Baton Rouge animal shelter needs emergency fosters, adopters for cats, dogs

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Dozens of cats and dogs need emergency homes after the Companion Animal Alliance reached critical overcapacity.

The shelter is housing over 270 cats and 250 dogs as of Tuesday, with over 70 animals taken in in the last day. According to CAA, there is no more space, and animals are now at risk of euthanasia.

“As the open-intake animal shelter for East Baton Rouge Parish, we cannot turn any animal away, regardless of our capacity. Our staff is doing everything we can, but we cannot do it alone,” CAA Executive Director JT Hackett. “We are asking our community to step up and become fosters, adopters, and advocates for CAA.”

A goal has been set to get 75 cats and 75 dogs into foster or adoptive homes by Friday, Aug. 8. A reduced adoption fee of $10 is being offered for all animals until Sunday.

Anyone interested in becoming an emergency foster or adopting a pet can stop at the shelter between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Companion Animal Alliance is located at 2550 Gourier Ave., Baton Rouge.
