State police said the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic incident at a home on Blackwell Road in Shelbyville, where a deputy saw a man and woman outside the home.
Police said 41-year-old Ryan McBride, from Shelbyville, allegedly retrieved a firearm and began shooting in the direction of the deputy, hitting a piece of his equipment and causing minor injury.
The agency did not say how many shots were fired.
The deputy, who has not been identified, then shot McBride. The Shelby County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene, officials said.
The deputy was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
No other injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
