Educators and community members greeted students with smiles and high fives on the first day at Brewer Early Innovation Academy. Doors opened at 7 a.m., giving students time to adjust to their school routine.
Teachers guided the students from outside the building to ensure they felt welcomed as they entered the school. Educators said that the staff and faculty have been eagerly awaiting the students’ return and are grateful for the first day.
According to Superintendent David Lewis, the school district is ready for a great year.
“We are really rolling today, we got a little bit of drizzle but nothing is going to dampen the spirits for the first day of school,” said David. “Teachers have been working since last week getting their rooms ready, going through training, and preparing for the new school year.”
Community leaders also showed up to make the day special. A local Masonic Order comes out to Brewer every year to pass out school supplies and greet students. They say Brewer is one of the schools in the area that needs attention, and they are happy to help.
The Black Male Leadership Institute had a similar mission this morning as they passed out donuts and bracelets. The institute’s Jose Quinones explained why their support is significant.
“We want to ensure that they know that we are present,’ said Quinones. “That more black males, and also Hispanics like me, we are going to show them and debunk the fact that their thought process of no one being there for them is not true.”
He added, “And donuts, who does not like donuts first thing in the morning?”
The school year is off to a sweet start, with school and community leaders coming together to build confident, life-long learners. District leaders also encourage any parents who haven’t registered yet to do so as soon as possible.
