In a post to Facebook, officials with the Bogalusa Police Department said three inmates were in transit to the Washington Parish Jail following court appearances when one attempted to escape from the vehicle as they headed west on Louisiana Highway 10.
The initial call from BPD officers reported that a man in an orange jumpsuit was unconscious and lying in the road near the intersection of LA-10 and Choctaw Road.
Responding EMS personnel arrived to take the inmate to Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton where he was airlifted to North Oak Medical Center and listed in critical condition.
The Louisiana State Police are investigating how the inmate was able to escape.
