Lewis explained that although the rainy weather did not help with concerns of delays on the first day, it wasn’t anything unexpected.
He also talked about the new safety protocols and English Language Arts curriculum. Lewis mentioned that weapon detection systems will be installed in the middle and high schools starting in the next week or two. The installments should be completed by the end of September.
According to Lewis, the change in the English Language Arts curriculum was mandated by the state so they have been training teachers this past year.
“Now we’re implementing those standards,’ said Lewis. “Of course the focus is on more rigorous standards, higher standards. Incorporating those things that we know our employers and our community as a whole expect our students to be able to know and do.”
Lewis plans to build on the momentum gained from last year’s K-12 initiative at Brewer Early Innovation Academy. He mentioned that the kids at Brewer had almost two years worth of growth in reading and considers that a successful part of the initiative.
As the school year has begun, Lewis encouraged parents to set routines for their kids and teachers to know their impact on students.
