On August 2, shortly after 2 p.m., troopers with Louisiana State Police began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on LA 358 near its intersection with LA 357. Officials said the crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Alex Chavis of Church Point.
Authorities said an investigation revealed Chavis was driving a 2017 Kia Optima west on LA 358. At the same time, a 2005 Dodge Ram was traveling east. For reasons still under investigation, the Kia crossed the centerline and struck the Dodge in the eastbound travel lane.
Officials said Chavis, who was unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Dodge, who was properly restrained, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
