Austin provides update on Longhorn Dam improvement project

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In a July update, the city of Austin said construction on the Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements project continues.

The project will bring a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge to connect the Ann & Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail and a new underpass beneath South Pleasant Valley Road

So far, the city said it has completed:

  • Eleven of the twelve bridge deck spans
  • One of the three below-deck planters
  • A camping deterrent near the section of the bridge connecting to the Holly Peninsula
  • Pedestrian sidewalks east of the underpass

The city said ongoing tasks include:

  • Grouted flagstone in the drainage ways of the underpass under South Pleasant Valley Road
  • Handrails along the bridge
  • Installation of the permanent irrigation system along the bridge and plaza
  • Future trees being planted in the area
  • Columns for the pergola above the plaza of the bridge
  • Fabrication of the ceramic mosaic tile artwork in the underpass

According to the city, substantial completion for the project is expected in December.
