A 17-year-old is facing a number of charges after fleeing from authorities after he was found asleep in the driver’s seat of his car.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, a welfare check was conducted at 7:45 a.m. Saturday for a driver, who appeared to be asleep in the driver’s seat of a parked car.
The car, located near railroad tracks on Johnson Road in the City of Cook, reportedly had a 17-year-old male asleep in the driver’s seat.
As an ambulance arrived in the area, the person reportedly woke up and sped away. The sheriff’s office said the same vehicle was reportedly driving recklessly after leaving the area.
The vehicle was later located on Highway 53 south of Cook, prompting deputies to pursue it.
Deputies said the driver did not pull over and eventually struck the median of Highway 53 and later struck a vehicle.
The car then started driving north back towards Cook, before the driver decided to stop on his own and was taken into custody without incident.
No injuries were sustained by the driver, deputies or nearby residents.
The sheriff’s office said the 17-year-old is facing charges of fleeing in a motor vehicle, fourth-degree DWI, speeding and having an open container in the vehicle.
