Severe thunderstorms and flooding hit parts of the Charlotte area on Friday

(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Severe weather is moving across the Piedmont and mountain regions on Friday evening, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and the threat of flooding.

The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings throughout the region, including Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Rowan, Gaston, Union, York, and Stanly Counties, with storms moving southeast at 20-25 mph.

Radar detected wind gusts up to 60 mph, and residents were urged to take shelter immediately, especially in areas like Charlotte, Huntersville, Concord, Gastonia, Matthews, and Salisbury.

So far, no major hail has been reported, but the storms are powerful enough to cause damage to trees and power lines, leading to the possibility of scattered power outages.

In the mountains and foothills, including Ashe, Watauga, Surry, and Wilkes Counties, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch until midnight. Up to 4 inches of rain is possible in localized areas, especially where slow-moving thunderstorms linger.

Some areas, including parts of Wilkes and Chesterfield Counties, are already experiencing minor flooding, particularly in low-lying spots and poor drainage areas. In Wilkes County, up to 4 inches of rain have fallen, prompting a Flood Advisory through the evening.
