Just before noon, fire crews responded to the area of the 2300 block of S. Minnewawa Ave. after receiving multiple reports of an outside fire spreading towards a home.
By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had reportedly extended to the home, and it was declared a working fire. It was contained to the back corner of the home and the adjacent room.
As a result, the home sustained significant damage and one adult and two kids were displaced; however, nobody reported injuries and fire crews rescued three dogs, a chameleon and a turtle.
Fire investigators report the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion involving oily rags that had been used earlier. Because of this, they recommend that the public store oily or solvent-soaked rags in an approved, fire-safe container to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion.
