23 homeless people cited in Fairfield, three arrested

(KRON) — In response to community concerns, Fairfield police officers went to an encampment and spoke with 33 homeless people, including many who declined to accept services and resources, officials said.

“In collaboration with the Fairfield Homeless Services Division, our officers routinely provide comprehensive assistance to our unhoused community. A small group of individuals consistently decline these services, while creating a significant workload for our officers and public works,” the Fairfield Police Department wrote Wednesday.

During an anti-blight operation on July 24, the Fairfield Police Homeless Intervention Team issued citations to 23 people and arrested three, police said.

Garbage generated at the encampment obstructed access to public pathways, open spaces, and businesses, police said. The city’s Public Works Homeless Engagement and Response Team also removed hazardous waste.

Team members were able to help some people who were willing to receive homeless services and resources, the police department added. Services include shelter, obtaining identification cards, finding income sources, addressing mental health concerns, and accessing prescription medications.

“We will also continue these protective cleanups to ensure our community remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents and visitors,” FPD wrote.
