AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Comptroller’s Office announced shoppers will have the opportunity to save on clothes and school supplies during the sales tax holiday running from Aug. 8 through Aug. 10.

“Back-to-school costs can add up fast,” said Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock, “Whether you prefer to shop in person or online, this tax-free weekend helps families stretch their hard-earned dollars, saving about $8 for every $100 spent. Texans have saved more than $2 billion since this tradition began in 1999, and we’re glad to keep it operating.”

The tax-free weekend will allow shoppers in Texas to purchase a range of items without state or local taxes, such as most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100. Diapers are also exempt from sales tax, as well as certain sanitizers and wipes which are tax-free year-round.

The office noted shoppers using layaway can also benefit, with items on layaway or with final payments made on existing layaway purchases during the holiday being tax-free for individual items priced below $100.

A full list of items available tax-free during the event can be found here.

Texas shoppers are expected to save an estimated $133.2 million in state and local taxes during the three-day event, according to the office.
