Pennsylvania Lawmaker proposes free fishing, hunting licenses for indigenous people

(WHTM) — A lawmaker wants to give Pennsylvania’s indigenous people free fishing and hunting licenses.

State Rep. Tim Briggs (D-149) is proposing legislation that allows for Pennsylvanians who provide proof of indigenous ancestry to receive licenses for both hunting and fishing.

There are no federally recognized tribes in Pennsylvania, but the state remains home to more than 20,000, according to the memo.

Pennsylvania is home to indigenous tribes, including the Erie, Iroquois Confederacy, Shawnee, Ohio Valley, Munsee, Susquehannock, and Lenni Lenape, per the memo.

State Rep. Briggs argues that indigenous people should be allowed to hunt freely on land that was colonized by settlers.

“As legislators, it is our duty to identify and right the wrongs of our predecessors, regardless of if it has been three or three hundred years,” the memo says.

This bill has not yet been submitted for introduction.
