Some of the work is taking place on the I-20 westbound bridge over the Big Black River. This is one of the projects that costs $17.1 million.
Michael Flood, MDOT public information officer, said the project calls for the repair of five bridges on I-20 East and West, as well as drainage work in the area. As of July 2025, crews are repairing the eastbound bridge. Flood said it will take several months to complete the eastbound bridge before moving to the westbound side.
“About five to seven more months just to complete these repairs on the eastbound side. And then once we finish up, that will move over to the westbound. And I’m told another five to seven months or so. So, that will go into the football season. The school year, it’s underway now,” he said.
Flood suggests leaving 15 to 20 minutes early during peak travel times. MDOT expects the project to be completed in Fall 2026.
Crews are also working to upgrade the entrance and exit ramps at the exit to Love’s Travel Stop on I-20 between Flowers and Edwards
“There’s going to be a roundabout there. They’re replacing asphalt on the eastbound deceleration lane and work is underway on the eastbound acceleration lane, as well. Nothing major to report as far as lane closures or big phase changes coming. Everything’s going to stay in place right now, which is one single, continuous single lane closure in each direction,” Flood said.
The interchange project costs $13.4 million and is also expected to be completed in Fall 2026.
