William Shatner talks about his most embarrassing moment in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Legendary actor, producer and director William Shatner, known for playing the beloved Captain Kirk on “Star Trek” is coming to New Orleans this Friday.

Shatner will be at The Fillmore for a special screening and Q&A session of the classic film, “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

WGNO’s Kenny Lopez spoke with the star about beaming in to NOLA.

Captain Kirk is landing!

“I’m coming to New Orleans,” Shatner enthusiastically said.

94-year old William Shatner, the living legend who plays Captain Kirk on “Star Trek,” is no stranger to missions to New Orleans.

“I’m well known in New Orleans. I was king of the Mardi Gras one time,” he said.

The year was 1987 when Shatner reigned as the King of Bacchus and he faced a case of gravitational pull.

“I was at City Hall and they brought me a glass of champagne, and I raise my glass in the air and my pants fall down. One of the most embarrassing moments I’ve ever had. I scrambled down to pick them up, spilled the champagne, and pulled my pants up and everyone laughed,” Shatner said.

This mission expects more laughs when he visits again. It is an opportunity for fans to be in his orbit.

“At a recent Q & A I remember a young man in a wheelchair saying that he had MS, and that when it hit him he couldn’t speak and he struggled to speak, and when he finally could get his first word out of his mouth, it was Kirk. That was a wow for me,” Shatner said.

This actor seems light years away but is very down to earth.

Fans will have a chance to ask Shatner questions during an audience-led Q&A.

“You’ll see the movie and then after it’s over I will come out on stage and answer questions and be amusing and tell anecdotes or anything else that the fans want to hear about,” Shatner said.

Shatner’s grateful for his long-time career, but mentioned his afterlife.

“I have said that in my will when I die, I want a tree planted on my grave. I want my body to nourish the young sapling. It will be a redwood tree,” Shatner said.
