NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — While the Atlantic is quiet… the Pacific is staying very active with two named storms and five total disturbances.

Hurricane Iona, located in the Central Pacific, is currently moving west at 13mph with sustained winds of 115mph. Iona is strengthening into a major category three hurricane sitting far south-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. The NHC is expecting the storm to weaken to a tropical storm by 8PM on Thursday and continue moving Northeast as a tropical storm through the weekend.

Tropical Storm Keli, located in the Central Pacific, is moving west at 12mph with sustained winds of 40mph. Keli is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30.

There are also three areas in the Pacific expected to form into some type of tropical system within the next seven days. There is a 90% chance of development just south of Mexico, a 30% chance for another storm south of Mexico, and a 60% chance of development in the Eastern Pacific.

The Atlantic remains calm for now. The National Hurricane Center is not expecting any development within the next seven days.

This time of year is when we start to see an increase in tropical activity with peak tropical season being around September 11th. From August to October is when ocean temperatures are very warm and there is an increase in atmospheric moisture which all benefit tropical formation.
