CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two days after a crash on Interstate 485 killed six people in west Charlotte, federal officials are now getting involved.

On Monday, the National Transportation and Safety Board announced it has opened a safety investigation into the multi-vehicle crash. It will be conducted in coordination with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred late Saturday morning, when state troopers said a Honda CR-V driven by a 16-year-old collided with a Chrysler van on the I-485 Outer lanes, leading both to become lodged underneath a tractor-trailer on the shoulder of the highway.

Six of the seven people in the two vehicles died, three of whom were under the age of 10. The one survivor, a 16-year-old from Gaston County, remains at a Charlotte hospital.

The highway patrol said Sunday that no charges would be filed.
