The Hub’s shelves are currently bare, and they are seeking donations to replenish their stock, particularly during the challenging summer months.
Teri Gore of The Hub Lafayette Urban Ministries said there is increased demand during summer as more members join the Lovewell Center.
“Hunger doesn’t take a vacation,” Gore said.
The Lovewell Center, part of The Hub, allows those facing homelessness and chronic poverty to become members, earn points and use these points to access resources such as haircuts, laundry services and clothing.
For six years, The Hub Lafayette Urban Ministries has been dedicated to providing access to a restored life for everyone in the city through its four main objectives: rescue, relationship, resources, and recovery.
“It is an opportunity to instill value and dignity back into someone that the world has pretty much stripped it away from,” Gore said.
The Eatwell section of the Lovewell Center is the most visited, where members use their points to purchase food, but it has been struggling with low stock during the summer.
Since January, the Lovewell Center has seen an influx of 390 new members, averaging over fifteen new members a week, which has made it difficult to keep up with demand.
There are over 20 drop-off locations throughout Acadiana where donations can be made to help stock the shelves of the Eatwell.
Gore encourages the community to shop local and support local businesses while donating to the Lovewell Center to help those in need.
Community members are encouraged to contribute to the food drive by bringing donations to one of the drop-off locations by July 31, helping The Hub continue its mission of empowerment and support.
