According to Gates Police, a fellow employee, 32-year-old Kyshonn Green, was identified as the suspect in the shooting. Officers said Green left New York State after the shooting, and he was arrested Sunday night in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Officers said at the time of the arrest, Green possessed a loaded handgun. The Gates Police Department is waiting for extradition so he can face charges.
Jamala Ridley, the mother of the victim, spoke with News 8, sharing gratitude that Green was caught, but misses her son.
“I just want my baby back, it’s just so devastating,” she said. “I’m grateful to the Gates Police Department and grateful to the chief and all the investigators when they reached out to me and told me. They came and they met with me yesterday and they told me that they caught him and I’m so grateful, hopefully I can get some answers as to why.”
Wegmans customers expressed concern due to some of the stores having a limited amount of produce. The company confirmed with News 8 that produce availability will be limited until mid-week as a result of the shooting.
A Wegmans representative says they are saddened by the loss of Ridley-Smith, calling him a valued member of their team.
At this time, authorities do not believe that the incident is connected to Thursday’s shooting outside of an Amazon Distribution Center in Gates.
No other Wegmans employees were injured during Saturday’s shooting.
