Chocolate sold at supermarkets in 8 states, DC recalled over risk of ‘serious’ allergic reaction

(WJW) – Chocolate candies that were sold in multiple states are being recalled over the potential presence of an undeclared milk allergen, which could cause a “serious or life-threatening” reaction to people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.

The recall applies to 18.5-ounce packages of Wegmans Semi–Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils produced by Mellace Family Brands California, Inc. of Warren, Ohio, according to a company notice posted by the FDA this week.

Mellace Family Brands California said in its notice that the issue “was caused by a temporary breakdown in the suppliers’ manufacturing process.”

No reports of injuries had been recorded as of last week, the company said.

The recalled product was distributed through Wegmans retail stores in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., according to the notice.

Consumers in the affected states can identify the recalled chocolates by their “best by” dates and lot codes, which are printed on the package.

The affected lot codes are:

  • 55021 BEST BY: DEC 28, 2025
  • 55031 BEST BY: DEC 29, 2025
  • 55491 BEST BY: FEB 13, 2026
  • 55501 BEST BY: FEB 14, 2026
  • 56061 BEST BY: APR 11, 2026
  • 56071 BEST BY: APR 12, 2026

The products also contained the following UPC and SCC (shipping container code): 0 77890 49787 6 (UPC), 10077890497873 (SCC).

Customers can return the chocolate to Wegmans for a refund or contact Wegmans at 1-855-934-3663 with additional questions.
