Salvation Army, Walmart team up for Baton Rouge school drive

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Salvation Army has partnered with Walmart for a national school supply drive in Baton Rouge, aiming to support families during the back-to-school season.

The initiative is part of the Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope program, which helps families break cycles of poverty. The drive seeks donations of school supplies such as calculators, backpacks, and school clothes to ease the financial burden on families.

“So, we’re out here today raising school supplies for our Pathway of Hope kids,” said Julia Mathemeier, the director of Development at the Salvation Army. “Things just get really expensive really quickly, so we do our best to especially since this is a national initiative with Walmart to do our best to give back.”

The Salvation Army’s effort is focused on collecting essential school items to ensure that children have what they need for a successful start to the school year.

Donations can be made at the Salvation Army office located at 7361 Airline Highway. Organizers emphasize that every item donated represents one less worry for a child on their first day of school.
