The pilot and co-pilot, 63-year-old Joseph Maxin and 55-year-old Timothy Blake, were killed in the crash, as well as passengers, 68-year-old Veronica Weller, 67-year-old James Weller, 36-year-old John Weller and 34-year-old Maria Weller.
The Cessna 441 crashed just before 7 a.m. June 29, between Spring Run Road and King Graves Road NE — just two miles away from the end of the runway at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.
According to the NTSB’s report, the plane reached an altitude of about 100 feet above the ground prior to the crash. Witnesses reported hearing the sound of the airplane taking off and then a noticeable pitch change in the engine sound. They said the airplane never appeared above the tree line and that the engine was “roaring,” according to the report.
They then heard trees breaking and a loud explosion, and saw smoke rising from the area where the plane went down.
After the crash, investigators with the NTSB took the plane’s engine and propellers, as well as other pieces of the plane, for further investigation.
The NTSB’s investigation is ongoing, and a full report hasn’t been released yet.
