(WHTM) — A Pennsylvania congressman called for added protection for Ghislaine Maxwell after a House Oversight committee voted to subpoena her to discuss her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Maxwell was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. Investigators said Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell.

“I urge immediate action to ensure her safety,” said Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.), one of three Republicans on the committee who voted to subpoena the Justice Department for files related to the Epstein investigation, in a letter to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Maxwell is scheduled to sit for a deposition on August 11 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Florida.

In recent weeks, Republicans have turned on President Donald Trump after the Justice Department walked back the release of files related to the Epstein case, including a supposed “client list” the department now denies exists.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sent lawmakers home early to avoid a vote forcing the administration to release the documents.

Perry, meanwhile, called Maxwell’s testimony on her relationship with the disgraced financier “invaluable” to Congress.

“As such, I request that she be placed immediately into Protective Custody within a Special Housing Unit, and continuously monitored immediately,” Perry said. “Given the abrupt and unexpected demise of lead suspect, Mr. Epstein in 2029 while in federal custody, we must take every precaution to ensure Ms. Maxwell is available to provide testimony.”

Perry added, “Our justice system must not once again fail the countless survivors of Mr. Epstein.”
