IDENTIFIED: Man dead after drowning in San Joaquin River

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man who died after drowning in the San Joaquin River Saturday has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office identified the man as 47-year-old Eric Torres of Fresno.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, dispatchers received a report of the need for a water rescue in the San Joaquin River.

Deputies, EMS and firefighters responded to the area of the river along Highway 99, between Avenue 7 and Herndon Avenue.

It was reported by deputies that Torres’ friends said he had gone swimming and had disappeared in the water.

Just after 6 p.m., deputies in the EAGLE one helicopter directed the dive team to where Torres was in the river.

Firefighters then swam out to the location, removed him from the water, and administered aid. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
