Pennsylvania’s solar panels can now power 350,000 homes
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — More solar power is coming to a local Midstate park.
Pennsylvania officials announced the installation of additional solar power equipment at Gifford Pinchot State Park, bringing the state’s capacity to two gigawatts of power.
“We have enough installed solar capacity now in Pennsylvania, two gigawatts, to power all the homes in Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, Scranton, York, and Williamsport,” said Steve Defrank, chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. “And this is more than just symbolic. It’s a demonstration of how fast our energy mix is evolving.”
Two gigawatts equal 2,000,000,000 watts, which is enough to power 350,000 homes. The state is on track to hit its goal of being 10% solar by 2030, which is about 10 gigawatts.
The state’s Department of Environmental Protection said adding more solar power to the grid reduces air pollution and lowers energy bills.
The Gifford Pinchot State Park’s solar array is 342 kW and provides shade of an ADA-accessible picnic area and parking in the Quaker Race Day use Area.

“This park uses clean energy from the sun and provides shade for cars in the parking area, modeling a practical way we can take climate action and serve visitors in an innovative way,” DCNR Deputy Secretary Mike Walsh said. “For 30 years, DCNR has been managing Pennsylvania’s natural resources with sustainability at the forefront. With leadership from Governor Shapiro, we continue to focus on the stewardship that strengthens communities and enhances our quality of life.”
