BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) is investigating after three people were killed in fires across the state, including in Livingston Parish.

SFM said that in each case, they found no smoke alarms in the homes.

In Denham Springs, crews responded to a house fire on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. on July 20. A 65-year-old man was killed, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

In Iberia Parish, the New Iberia Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out in the 1300 block of Marshfield Road around 11:30 a.m. July 18. A 71-year-old man died in the fire. The cause remains undetermined.

In Winn Parish, crews were called to a fire in the 1000 block of Louisiana Highway 1232 at around 3:30 p.m. A 51-year-old woman was killed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“These tragedies are stark reminders of how critical it is to have working smoke alarms in your home,” said Principal Assistant State Fire Marshal Bryan J. Adams. “A few minutes can make the difference between life and death. If you don’t have smoke alarms, we can help.”
