New Orleans Saints Tyrann Mathieu announces retirement, officials confirm

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana native and New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement.

According to a social media post from Mathieu, he said he is filled with gratitude as he closes this chapter in his life.

“As I hand up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way.

From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.

To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined.

I hope I made you proud out there. This isn’t goodbye — it’s just the next chapter.”

Mathieu attended LSU from 2010 to 2013 before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. The standout safety played 12 years in the NFL with teams including the Houston Texans, the Kansas City Chiefs, and ended his career with the Saints.

The 33-year-old football player recorded 631 solo tackles, 111 sacks, 36 interceptions returned for a total of 530 yards, with four being pick-sixes, seven forced fumbles, and 106 pass breakups.

Mathieu won one Super Bowl championship in 2020 when the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers.

He was nominated for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award by his teammates with the Chiefs and the Saints through his nonprofit organization, the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation.
