The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, dedicates its resources to help create a just and fair immigration system by employing litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications.
The council argues that the U.S has failed to afford migrants due process, and that outdated immigration laws and policies discourage innovation, turn away those in need of protection, and do not respect the family unit. Additionally, the council states that current immigration laws do not support competitiveness and prosperity, and do not honor American values.
“We envision a nation where immigrants are embraced, communities are enriched, and justice prevails for all. We strive to create a society that values immigrants as vital contributors to our nation and where everyone is afforded an equal opportunity to thrive socially, economically, and culturally,” the organization said
According to its Website, the council serves thousands of individuals in immigration detention centers, increasing access to legal counsel. It also uses the courts to demand a fair process for immigrants by bringing “lawsuits that hold the government accountable for unlawful conduct and restrictive interpretations and implementation of the law.”
In this episode of Border Report Live, guest Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, discusses current immigration policies, President Donald Trump’s executive orders, and legislation on the council’s radar.
