NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Southeastern Louisiana is under an extreme heat watch for Tuesday through Wednesday with counties to our north under an extreme heat warning. Washington Parish is expected to reach 100° today with surrounding north shore parishes in the upper 90s.
On the south shore, temperatures will climb into the mid 90s.
Heat index values will stick between 105° -110° for today and Wednesday for all of southeast Louisiana.
The National Weather Service urges everyone to take frequent breaks in the shade or AC if you are outside, drink plenty of water, and to bring pets indoors. Heat exhaustion or heat stroke are both likely with prolonged exposure during these conditions.
What is the difference between a heat advisory, extreme heat watch, and extreme heat warning? An advisory is issued when the temperature reaches 103° or we have a heat index of 108° or greater. An extreme heat warning is issued when the temperature reaches 105° or heat index values reach 113°, while a watch is issued when these conditions are expected.
Temperatures for the next two days stay in mid 90s, with an extreme heat watch issued through Wednesday. Rain chances crawl back into the forecast on Wednesday evening through the weekend. With rain chances up, temperatures settle back into the upper 80s.
